Salwar Kameez, Churidaar

Salwar Kameez Historically, it started in the provinces of Kashmir and Punjab in South Asia. Before you know it, it was popular in all over India and in all the muslim countries of the world. In its traditional form, it was the main dress for women but several variations have been popular among men as well. Western Celebrities also love the Salwar (Shalwar) kameez at high profile events. Salwar are pajama style trousers gathered at the waist and ankles, worn underneath a long, loose tunic known as a kameez. With influence from different cultures and designers, salwar kameez have evolved as modern dress as well, which is easy to wear and satisfies needs of modern young fashion conscious women. Salwars come in different styles - traditional which is more “baggy” in style and has lots of gathers. Then, there is "churidaar" style, which is tighter version of salwar and has several pleats after knee going upto ankles. Some traditional churidaar salwars are made at least twice the required length to get heavy pleats in the legs. Kameez (shirt) come in several flavors too. Sleevless, half sleeves, 3/4 sleeves and so on. Kameez length varies from waist line going down to ankles; most popular being close to knee length. Depending on design and culture, salwar kameez is worn with long scarf (dupatta). Dupatta is usually a sheer cloth (with or without design), used as a scarf. It adds immensely to the beauty of the dress.

Over the years, fashion has graduated and the style of draping a saree has gone through a lot of changes. From a two piece tied up clothing to nine yards long draping reverie, the saree has dressed Indian women over the ages, and will continue to do so. Mens clothing in ancient India has been influenced by a lot of external factors. Men wore a long piece of cloth mostly white in colour called dhoti and tie it around their legs so that they could walk and work easily. After the Islamic invasion, Persian clothing entered India and kurta pajama became very popular. Churidaar were worn by both men and women but they accessorized it differently.

Rich people wore silk accompanied with gold ear rings, nose pins and bangles, chains and bracelets whereas the poor preferred cotton. With the advent of British, Indian clothing went through a sea of change. Now trousers and skirts became a part of their dressing but Indian clothing never really lost its charm.
